Jeffrey Grey Award

for Postgraduate or Early-career Research Mobility

Professor Jeff Grey (1959-2016) was an Australian military historian who taught at the Australian Defence Force Academy, University of New South Wales in Canberra. A superb and prolific historian of twentieth century military history, his extensive travelling for research and conferences in combination with his personal charm and intellectual generosity to all ensured that he had many friends around the world.

Regulations

Prize: up to £1000 and an official certificate/formal letter from the President. Frequency: Annual

Eligibility criteria: Postgraduate candidates or holders of doctorates within 5 years of award. Eligibility may be extended further than 5 years if a nominee has experienced an extended break in their research career. If this applies, the circumstances should be explained in the nomination.

Application and selection process:

  • Candidates must be a current member of the Society, and may apply directly to the Awards Committee for this Award. The Award will be judged once annually.
    • The candidate should write an explanation of up to 500 words of their travel purpose and its significance for their research.
    • The candidate should supply an indicative budget of costs.
    • The successful candidate will be required to provide a brief research report within 12 months, explaining how the Award has assisted their research.
  • Deadline for applications: 1 June.
  • Applications will be assessed by the Awards Committee of the Society.

Selection criteria may include (but are not limited to):

○ Support to attend a Society event

○ Importance of event/travel to the candidate’s research

○ Likely outcomes

○ Evidence of other funding

○ Previous support from the Society
