Dennis Showalter Public Lecture

for an Emerging Scholar

Dennis Showalter was Professor of History at Colorado College, the author or editor of 16 books and numerous articles, and a former president of the Society for Military History. He believed in rescuing stray cats, the New York Yankees baseball team, and the responsibility of senior scholars to mentor and encourage the next generation.

Regulations

Prize: Delivery of a lecture on an unpublished First World War topic of the lecturer’s choice.

  • Lecture to be released on the Society’s YouTube channel.
  • Lecture to be published in First World War Studies.

Lecture venue: To be determined, based on the location of each year’s Lecturer.
Frequency: Annual
Eligibility criteria: Postgraduate candidates or holders of doctorates within 5 years of award. A
current or ongoing academic position is not a prerequisite for eligibility.
Eligibility may be extended further than 5 years if a nominee has experienced an extended break
in their research career. If this applies, the circumstances should be explained in the nomination.
Nomination and selection process:

  • Nominees must be a current member of the Society by the deadline for nominations. They must be nominated by 2 members (proposer/seconder) of the International Society for First World War Studies, including a recommendation of up to 500 words.
  • Nominees must consent to be nominated and the nominations should be accompanied by the nominee’s CV and a 5-minute recorded presentation by the nominee, outlining their proposed Lecture topic.
  • Any member of the Society may either nominate or second (not both) a single nominee per year.
  • Nominees will be assessed by the Awards Committee of the Society. In recognition of Dennis Showalter’s talents, the nomination must comment specifically on the nominee’s abilities as a public speaker, evidence of their collegiality and what makes the researcher’s current work innovative. Nominations that do not included discussion of these criteria will be disregarded by the Awards Committee.
  • Unsuccessful nominees may be re-nominated in future years.
  • Deadline for nominations: 1 June.

o Conference and other papers presented
o Invitations
o Institutional position held
o Grants received
o Public impact
o Service to their discipline
