Canada 2023

Borders

Call for Papers

The International Society for First World War Studies is pleased to announce its 13th conference, to be held for the first time in Canada, at the University of Windsor, 26-28 September 2023. Windsor’s Canadian downtown sits on the edge of the Detroit River directly opposite the American downtown of Detroit, which is one mile away on the (unexpectedly) northern shore. This is by any definition a ‘borderland’ and this year’s theme will be ‘Borders’. The recent influence of ‘border studies’ on historical research is palpable, and we thus welcome submissions not only on the classic issues of borderlands, but also the mobilities of (forced) migrations, the internal borders of hybridity, as well as plural alliances and identities. On the final afternoon of the conference we will be crossing the border from pure research to how the First World War is taught in the classroom, and thus also welcome contributions to present on this theme.

While all First World War themes are welcome, in keeping with the conference focus, the following areas are particularly encouraged:

Teaching of the First World War in school or university settingshould not exceed 8000 words.

  • Border drawing, creation, construction
  • Border communities
  • Diaspora
  • Migration
  • Refugees, ethnic cleansing
  • International diplomacy, efforts, movements
  • Mobilities/Crossings
  • Borders within subjects
  • Hybrid identities
  • Borderless identities, such as Indigenous or non-national groups
  • Teaching of the First World War in school or university settings

Held in Windsor, Ontario, and the Downtown Armouries, 28-30 September 2023.
