I met Elizabeth at the 2002 SFHS conference in Toronto, where I also met yourself and Bob Young for the first time. I felt privileged to have presented alongside her, as I’m sure our co-panelist Robert Hanks did too.
We obviously were both interested in Anglo-French relations during the Great War, though approached the topic from what could only be described as opposite poles.
Nevertheless, I badgered her by email on several occasions, as my own book was taking shape, knowing that her knowledge of French archives - an anomaly, to my mind, amongst British historians working on the BEF - was vast. She was genuinely interested, helpful, and keen to promote my own work, for which I’ll eternally be grateful.
My condolences to her friends and family.
