French Writers of the Great War/Écrivains français de la Grande Guerre

I first created the website, French Writers of the Great War/Écrivains français de la Grande Guerre in 2006 to introduce scholars and the lay public to the many French pacifist poets who wrote in direct response to the hostilities. While many pro- and antiwar poets from other, especially anglophone countries, are well-known, French poets remained largely unrecognized. The main goal was to preserve their poems, and through an annotated bibliographic format based on my publications, to provide analyses of their works in both formal and historical contexts.

Over the years I expanded the site as my own research evolved to include French women novelists and women poets. These works supported the war, but through a specifically female voice that argued for the agency and independence of the protagonists.

Many of the numerous visitors to the site have written to me, including historians, literary scholars, composers, and even French lycée students asking for research help. This is the most gratifying result of the website, which is continually updated and now located at (https://www.mtsu.edu/faculty/goldberg).
