The Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the International Society for First World War Studies condemns Russia’s military assault on Ukraine and President Putin’s use of historical distortions and lies in the attempt to justify this attack on Ukrainian sovereignty. As a community of scholars studying the history of a global conflict which brought the relentless violence of total war to Europe, we are appalled by the unfolding tragedy prompted by these unwarranted actions. We stand in solidarity with all the people of Ukraine and Russia who oppose this war.
