CFP: WW1 and its Heritage in the 100th Anniversary

Dear scholars, colleagues and guests,

It is a great honour to announce our conference entitled ‘the International Congress on War History Studies’ (ICOWHIS) to be held in Çanakkale, Turkey on 6-8 November 2014 at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University. The main aim of the conference is to create a platform in which wartime history studies are discussed with a specific focus on the World War I and its heritage in the 100th Anniversary. The World War I, as one of the greatest wars of humanity, requires specific attention both in national and international arenas since the Ottoman Empire participated in the war and the region itself and the surrounding areas witnessed the leading great wars. The 100th Anniversary of the World War I, would therefore provide an important occasion to initiate an international scientific organisation on war history studies. The congress is planned to be held biennially and the theme of the first meeting will be ‘the World War I and its Heritage in the 100th Anniversary’. The particular focus will be on political, social, economic, and cultural consequences of the war that had deep impacts on today’s societies.

Wars can not be dealt solely as military activities since wars encompass not only all fields of human behaviour but also the whole concept of wartime phenomenon ranging from military industries to cultural values. In this respect, wars constitute the main part of social memory and national identity. Therefore, social science researchers need to evaluate all aspects of wartime phenomenon as human work and use the data rigorously in projecting the future.

We hope that this event will provide an occasion for gathering the researchers to discuss and share issues on wartime history and encourage all academic disciplines of the humanities to treat wartime studies as a social phenomenon. We expect many researchers and colleagues to choose our biennial event as an outlet for their research findings. Abstracts can be submitted by email to satauk@comu.edu.tr. All proposals will be blind-reviewed by the screening committee for scope and quality. You can find further information about structuring and submitting your proposal as well as screening policy and important dates for the conference in related links on our web site.

We hope that this event will provide an occasion for us to gain insights, leading to better understanding and appreciation of the particular topic. We are looking forward to meeting you in Çanakkale-Turkey at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University on 6-8 November 2014.
