SUMMARY:Non-academic Careers 1
DESCRIPTION:This event will see Society members discuss their non-academ
ic careers and research\n\nThis event\, potentially the first in a serie
s\, will see Society members discuss their careers outside academia and
how it enables them to research or work on the First World War.\n\nDr Ro
salie Triolo has trained specialist History teachers at Australia’s Mo
nash University for 25+ years in a ‘History teaching’ career of 45.
She asserts that while FWW school teaching occurs beyond the academy\, H
istory teachers derive longer-term\, richer careers\, as well as purpose
ful\, rewarding experiences for their students\, when acting academicall
 y. Additionally\, FWW events and resources abound in local communities.\
n\nDr Simon Gregor has worked for 10-15 years now as a private tutor onl
ine\, in person and also from time-to-time "in the field" as a tour guid
 e. He took his first degree (in English Literature) at the University of
Cambridge\, and then his PhD in history at the University of Wolverhamp
ton\, focussing on the commemoration of the First World War on its battl
efields. He has worked extensively as a historical and literary tour gui
de in Europe\, focussing on the battlefields of both world wars\, as wel
l as in locations pertinent to the Cold War. He emigrated to the United
States in 2023\, and now lives in Detroit\, where he teaches history\, l
iterature and politics to UK\, US and other students\, supporting both s
chool-age and adult learners. He will talk about how his experiences of
studying helped equip him with some of the skills needed for these roles
\; and will also be honest about the ways they did not\, leaving some im
portant "development gaps" to fill in!\n\nRichard Bowes served as an arm
our officer in the Canadian Army for 23 years. From 2003-2018 Richard wo
rked for several companies in the Canadian defence and security industry
in senior and executive level management roles and then transitioned to
acting as an independent strategic advisor to government and industry f
ocusing on defence and security matters until early 2025. Richard holds
a Master of Arts degree in War Studies from the Royal Military College o
f Canada (2000)\; a Master of Business Administration degree from Athaba
sca University (2005)\; and is a graduate of the Joint Command and Staff
Programme (JCSP) at Canadian Forces College (1998). Currently\, Richard
is a PhD Candidate in History at Queen’s University\, Kingston\, Onta
rio\, Canada.\n\nDr Richard Wasserman has retired from a career as an US
Army officer (38 years of active federal service) and 9 years as a high
school Army JROTC Senior Army Instructor. He earned his doctorate last
year from Drew University as a Doctor of Letters. His dissertation was a
bout New Jersey and WWI and he has signed a contract with Casemate/Brook
line to have a book length version of it published.
