To mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, the conference „On the front and behind the front: The First World War and its military and social battlefields” organised by the Swiss Association for Military History and Military Science (SVMM) and the Military Academy at ETH Zurich (MILAK) aims at making a significant contribution to transnational studies of the Great War from a number of perspectives. At the centre of the conference will be questions regarding military, social and cultural history. A number of current research fields of the First World War are to be explored and approached from a comparative perspective. In the section on military history, speakers will discuss military recruitment, the now widely debated question of combat motivation of the participating armies, the tactical and operational challenges of the industrialised battlefield as well as the solutions to these issues put forward by various military apparatus. At the centre of the section on social and cultural history will be the ever ongoing question of the totality of the First World War, as well as questions concerning the various forms of war memory and remembrance. Therefore, the conference not a symposium for experts only but a platform which brings together the various research areas of the First World War.
The conference is organised by Professor Rudolf Jaun (University of Zürich and SVMM) and Dr. Michael M. Olsansky (Military Academy at ETH Zurich and SVMM). The conference is aimed at the historically interested public. Students may attend free of charge.
